In considering the theme for this unit, I contemplated several options. One idea was to create a synthesizer while also studying the relationship between circuit chips and programming. This choice represents a significant challenge for me, as it would deepen my understanding of circuits and synthesizers, laying a foundation for the ideas I have for my final project. However, the downside is the tight timeline and the limitations it imposes on the choice of thesis topics.
Another option was to create ambient music to explore the impact of sound on people’s emotions and psychology. The advantage of this choice is my keen interest in the areas of emotions and psychology, but the downside is that, as a personal project, I wanted to challenge myself further.
A third option involved studying how echoes are produced, controlled, and applied in devices. This interest was sparked during a holiday trip when I inadvertently walked past a wall, taller than the others, with a friend. While chatting, we clearly heard our echo and were quite amazed. The appeal of this option lies in my fascination with the topic, but the constraints are similar: the potential for tight timeframes and higher costs.
Ultimately, I have decided to use Max MSP to integrate photography and sound into a multimedia project that blends visual and audio elements. The central theme of my project is the wedding dress, a symbol of a woman’s dreams of beautiful love and commitment. From a young age, I often heard that wearing a wedding dress is every girl’s dream. Yet, a wedding dress also signifies responsibilities, constraints, and the onset of a new life stage. Not every relationship has a fairy-tale ending, however. Betrayal, distrust, and violence are recurrent, and love can sometimes become a destructive force. Emotions can lead to a loss of self, dependence on another, or being swayed by feelings, immersing oneself in an idyllic utopia or internal conflict. Learning to handle relationships correctly, facing separations, understanding oneself, and embracing one’s identity are challenges everyone must face. I chose the wedding dress as a motif to explore these themes, sharing my personal narrative of growth within relationships. I hope to offer both encouragement and reflection to myself and audience.
